The Art of Curating a Home You Love

Updated: Oct 29

Hello, and welcome to the Desert Lotus Vintage blog! I’m Sharifah McKay, owner of this vintage treasure trove, and today I want to share a little about my love for vintage, especially when it comes to decorating my home.

There’s something incredibly special about filling a space with pieces that not only tell a story but also bring comfort and joy every time you walk into a room. To me, that's the magic of vintage and antique décor.

Recently, I updated my gallery wall, which is one of my favorite corners of the house. Gallery walls are an excellent way to showcase personal style, and mine is ever-evolving, reflecting the art and objects I collect along the way. This time, I added a few original paintings I found at an estate sale. I love the feeling of stumbling upon pieces that speak to me, and these certainly did, despite the fact that I had never heard of the artists before.

You don’t need to know the name behind the brush to appreciate the art on your walls. In fact, I’ve always believed that the most important part of curating a collection—whether it’s art, décor, or clothing—is how each piece makes you feel. Trust your instincts! When something captures your attention, it’s worth adding to your space, even if you’re unfamiliar with the artist or the subject matter. Art has the power to move us in ways that transcend recognition or fame.

The beauty of my new gallery wall isn’t in the name behind each painting but in the way the colors, textures, and subjects complement each other in a wonderfully eclectic mix. Some pieces are vibrant, while others are soft and muted. Some tell a story, while others leave much to the imagination. But when hung together, they create a harmony that feels right in my home.

That’s what makes decorating with vintage so fulfilling—the joy of creating a space that is uniquely yours, filled with items that spark inspiration and connection. Every piece has a past, and now, it becomes a part of my story, too.

If you’re thinking about adding to your own gallery wall or starting one, my advice is simple: choose what speaks to you. Let your home be a reflection of the things you love, regardless of trends or labels. After all, it’s your personal touch that makes a house feel like home.

Until next time, keep curating and creating a space that tells your story.

Stay Golden!
